Labor Day Weekend Safety: Drunk Driving Accidents

Roman & Gaynor wishes everyone a happy Labor Day weekend! If you and your loved ones have plans to celebrate the upcoming holiday weekend, our team of personal injury lawyers would like to remind you about the importance of making safety a priority.

Statistically, Labor Day weekend has been shown to be one of the more dangerous times of year. During the holiday weekend, hospitals see a spike in emergency room visits for a variety of injuries, including those involving:

  • Auto accidents and drunk driving accidents
  • Alcohol-related incidents
  • Pool accidents and drownings
  • Burn injuries from barbecues and fireworks

Although there are a number of accidents that tend to increase over the Labor Day weekend, few are as concerning as the surge in auto accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Labor Day weekend is a dangerous time on our public roads and highways particularly due to alcohol-involved crashes.

Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer, a time when the weather is still nice and most people can enjoy a three day weekend. As such, it’s become a holiday many people choose to celebrate with drinking. Unfortunately, when people make the negligent decision to get behind the wheel after having too much to drink, they place others on the road in serious danger.

To combat the spike in alcohol-related accidents that tends to occur during the Labor Day holiday, law enforcement across the country - and throughout Florida - increase their efforts to crack down on impaired drivers. Often, this period of increased enforcement will consist of planned DUI checkpoints and more officers on patrol.

At Roman & Gaynor, we have worked with many car accident victims and families whose lives were forever changed by the negligence of impaired motorists. We encourage anyone who plans on celebrating this weekend to drink responsibly or plan a ride. Remember, impaired drivers can be held criminally accountable for their actions, and civilly responsible for the damages they cause victims.
