Five Safe Driving Tips for Rainy Weather

Five Safe Driving Tips for Rainy Weather

Increase Safety & Decrease Your Chances of an Accident

The holiday season is here, and winter weather comes with it. Cold weather, fog, and rain can make driving conditions dangerous, especially with increased holiday traffic. Here are few way to facilitate safe driving during the holidays and decrease your chances of an accident:

  • Leave enough room between cars. Winter weather, especially rain, can make it difficult for your vehicle to accelerate and decelerate at normal speeds. This means that you may not be able to stop as quickly as you expect. To avoid accidents, always leave adequate room between your vehicle and the car in front of you. Do not tailgate.
  • Avoid cruise control. Most vehicles have cruise control, but this feature can pose a safety risk during wet weather. Cruise control is a useful feature in dry weather conditions, but it can cause you to lose control of the car if you use it in the rain or snow. Without cruise control, you have more options when responding to traffic situations.
  • Know how to respond when your car skids. Skidding is scary, but normal in rainy weather. If you know how to respond, you can maintain control of your vehicle and avoid an accident. If your car starts to skid, do not hit the brakes; continue steering the car in the direction that you want it to travel. This allows the vehicle to recover from the skid.
  • Use your headlights. Even in the middle of the day, headlights can help you see other cars and help other drivers see you. In some states, it is unlawful to drive with your windshield wipers on and your headlights off. Regardless of local vehicle codes, it is prudent to keep your headlights on if your windshield wipers are on.
  • Maintain your vehicle. Maintenance is always important, especially in severe weather conditions. Make sure that your windshield wiper blades function properly before you drive in the raid. Never drive with tires that are not inflated properly, or else you run the risk of unnecessary skidding on wet pavement.

If you are involved in a car accident, you may be able to seek compensation for your injuries. To learn more about your legal options, speak with an accident attorney from Roman & Gaynor today.
