The Epidemic of Distraction-Related Car Accidents

The Epidemic of Distraction-Related Car Accidents

Driver distraction kills more than 3,000 people every year according to a study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). When thousands of people are killed in the United States every year resulting from one cause, you could conclude that distracted drivers are an "epidemic." Fortunately, there is a "cure" for this epidemic.

Florida recently passed a law banning texting while driving, making it a secondary offense. While we applaud the state's efforts to reduce the number of distraction-related accidents, we believe that this legislation might actually be too lenient. A secondary offense means that law enforcement cannot pull drivers offer for texting and driving alone. They must have committed another offense such as running a stop sign, speeding, etc. Also, the fine for texting while driving is just $30.

Distraction doesn't just come in the form of texting or other cell phone use. Things like eating while driving, changing the music and even talking to other people in the vehicle can constitute "distraction," yet texting while driving is by far the most dangerous.

More than 3,000 people are killed and thousands of others are injured in accidents caused by distracted drivers. One of the most tragic things about this statistic is that all these deaths and injuries are avoidable. Roman & Gaynor stands strong against distracted driving and has taken the pledge to not text and drive.
